Success can be a lonely road

If you want a easy road, follow the majority. Those who walk alone have the strongest direction and walk their own path towards success. They know what’s waiting for them, because they’ll pave the way there if they need to.

The world is filled with followers, only a few step out of the pack and stand for their ideas and pave new roads for themselves. The natural expectation of people is support, motivation and help. In most cases though, it’s the opposite. Friends, family, and even strangers will question your decision.

Be prepared for dream assassins

A dream assassin can be anyone, it’s a person that sees your dream and tries to take it away from you. A dream assassins favorite weapon is discouragement, criticism, and patronizing.

I stopped following the herd a long time ago. I have been in international competitions since I was a kid, and launched multiple complex projects. When I was younger, I expected a pat on the back for my hard work. Now when I’m older and wiser, I know most people are constantly trying to minimize others to protect their world view and ego.

Defending against these people is difficult, but you can learn it. I was helped greatly by learning Stoicism. Your best line of defense is knowing who you are, and what matters to you. You should listen to your own voice first, before listening to others. Know that the opinions of others aren’t from facts, they come from their fear and jealousy.

Create a map for success

When you’re walking on your own road you need to know where you are going. The best way to stay on course is to create a good idea of who you are, and where you want to be. A good tool for this is creating goals.

If you have a dream of moving from California to New York, you’re not going to get there. If you have a plan for how to get there, and break it into steps the success-rate is a lot bigger. This applies to every goal you will take in life.

Evaluate that your goal is something you truly want to do. Then break it down to steps you need to take and make goals out of them. Evaluate it every week or every month to make sure you’re heading in the right direction.
